Like all oral surgeons, Dr. Williams is trained and skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of oral pathologies. Oral pathologies can range from a canker sore to a more serious issue, such as oral cancer. While not all pathologies cause symptoms that are noticeable at home, we recommend being mindful of any changes in the color or texture of the mucosa (the skin on the inside of the mouth), as these could be warning signs of oral pathology. Don’t worry, most pathologies in the mouth, salivary glands, or jaws will not be serious, but your oral surgeon should always examine any changes you notice in these areas.
Signs and Symptoms of Oral Pathologies
If you notice any of the following in your mouth, please contact White Mountain Dental Implant and Oral Surgery Center so we can schedule a pathology screening for you with Dr. Williams:
- Red or white patches in the mouth
- A sore that fails to heal and/or bleeds easily
- A lump or irregularity on any part of the mucosa
- A chronic sore throat or hoarseness and/or difficulty in chewing or swallowing
If your oral surgeon suspects that you have an oral pathology, he may perform a biopsy of the affected area. An oral biopsy is a small sample of oral tissue that your oral surgeon removes, typically using local anesthesia so that you do not feel any discomfort. This tissue is sent to a lab for a diagnosis. Once there’s a diagnosis, your oral surgeon will recommend the next steps for treatment that will get your mouth back to health.
